On completion of this course, you will have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing a yacht as crew and helm with a skipper on board in light winds. It is also a refresher for earlier experience.
By the end of the course you should be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light winds. All of our courses are taught by RYA qualified instructors in groups with a maximum ratio of 5 students to each instructor.
For this course some basic yachting experience is required. It is also recommended that you have theory knowledge up to the level of Essential Navigation and Seamanship before you start this course; it will help you to get much more out of this course, and deepen your knowledge about sailing at sea and the various aspects you will need to cope with.
You will be taught the fundamentals of crewing such as ropework, fire precautions and fighting, personal safety equipment, man overboard, emergency equipment, meteorology, seasickness, helmsmanship, general duties, manners and customs, rules of the road, nautical terms, sail handling and helming, as well as how to "live" in the environment of a cruising yacht. You sleep on board during the course and weather and tide permitting, you will visit some interesting places and have an enjoyable weekend break.
